Euro Mine Expo in Swedish Lapland

What better place to hold a mining show than at one of the richest mineral areas in the world? Euro Mine Expo is being held in Skellefteå, a city in the northern part of Sweden with a long mining and smelting tradition combined with world-class institutions and a constantly growing industrial sector. Skellefteå is known as “The Gold City,” and the world-renowned Skelleftefältet (the Skellefteå tract) is one of the richest mineral areas in the world and has a rich seam of gold.  As a result, the 3-day show — which is held every other year — will be focusing on Europe’s minerals industry.  It promises to be one of the most important mining shows in Europe, with some of the most prestigious companies in the sector represented.  If you attend, you will have the chance to meet worldwide mining equipment suppliers, consulting and service companies, research scientists, investors, government authorities, and industry players. The show has three main themes this year:  Europe, the Economy, and Technological Advancements in Mining. There will be special topics on exploration, mining, processing, and metals recovery from mining waste.  If you are looking for some of the latest innovations and trends, the Innovation Forum holds mini-seminars all day long.  Exhibitors present for 15 minutes, and then they can provide a video of their presentation after the trade show.  So if you can’t make a particular seminar, make sure you ask the exhibitor to give you access to the video. I’ll be in Copper Hall 254 demonstrating an extensive mining portfolio of instruments, equipment and software for advancing mining. I’ll be especially focused on mineral beneficiation with our capabilities including elemental, particle size and moisture analysis together with integrated metallurgical slurry sampling. Don’t forget to make reservations for some of the field trips.  There’s one to Malå, one of the region’s mining centers and home to several prospecting companies. You’ll visit the Drill Core Archive (which has up to 3.5 million cores), and the famous Sankta Anna underground church in Kristineberg, which is an ecumenical church located 90 meters below ground. There’s also a field trip to the Rönnskär copper smelter, one of the largest copper smelters of its kind in the world. It extracts base and precious metals from mining concentrates and secondary materials like electronic scrap. And a trip to the Kankberg gold and tellurium mine, which is 500 meters deep, and employs the cut-and-fill method with granite used as backfill material. It’s a busy show but make sure you take some recreational time.  Skellefteå is the southern outpost of Swedish Lapland, right by the Gulf of Bothnia coast, south of the Arctic Circle. It will be a bit chilly, but its location and time of year means it is light almost 24 hours a day – midnight sun!
